Overview of the GDPR
What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation was adpoted by the EU in May 2016. The document which will come into force in May 2018 will supersede the UK’s current Data Protection Act.
How will GDPR be different to the Data Protection Act?
Once imposed, the GDPR will impose new regulations that give users greater control over their personal data. The current Data Protection Act was imposed before the internet became a way for criminals to exploit data and this new document will address this.
The document will enforce tougher measure for business compliance in the hope to improve trust in the digital economy.
How will this effect my business?
Tougher enforcement measures and fines will come into play with the GDPR but at the same time, so will a simpler, clearer environment.
The document came into force on 24 May 2016 but the EU has given businesses up until 25 May 2018 before the law applies to them.
